Seminar recommends women candidates in forthcoming elections

A two-day national seminar on the theme “Towards a new horizon” which concluded here this evening under the aegis of Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) came out with nine recommendations, among which, it will “press for inclusion and fielding of women candidates by all the political parties in Nagaland in the forthcoming elections” due in early part of 2008.

The seminar also recommended that the NSCW will press upon the State Government to expedite the passing of the State Policy for Women in Nagaland. The NSCW will also make a recommendation for the speedy adoption and implementation of the protection of women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The NSCW will recommend to the state government the introduction of the institution of ‘Gaonburis’ in the villages for gender justice and equity, another recommendation says. 

Other recommendations arrived at the seminar included; demand for inclusion of women representatives in the village council, village judiciaries and customary courts (Dobashi courts), proper implementation of the VDB Model Rules, implementation of the Nagaland Municipal Act amendments for reservation of seats for women, amendment of the Village and Area Council Act by inclusion of adequate representation of women and  will demand for inclusion of women representatives in all village-level health committees. Sources said that the recommendations from the seminar will be submitted to the State Government as well as to the National Commission for Women.

Talitemjen Ao, Chief Information Commissioner of Nagaland graced the valedictory session as the chief guest. The function was chaired by Lithrongla Chishi while NSCW chairperson Sano Vamuzo offered the vote of thanks. 

It may be recalled that the two-day seminar touched on various topics like gender equity and RTI, legal rights and women, social empowerment of women, women in decision-making, economic empowerment of women and women and health.
