Sensitisation programme on tobacco and COPTA Act held in Zunheboto

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 27 (MExN): A sensitization program on the harmful effects of tobacco and COTPA Act 2003 was held in Zunheboto.


Dr K Akaho Sema, Deputy CMO, Zunheboto speaking at the programme said that tobacco contributes to most of the leading causes of death in the world. He stated that tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs. 


He also elaborated about the risk factor and consequences of tobacco use and encouraged the participants to do away with the use of tobacco.


The Deputy CMO said that globally 10 million people die every year due to tobacco use and in India 1 million people die every year due to tobacco use, 300 Indians die every day due to tobacco use and 40% of all cancer in India are due to tobacco use. 90% of oral cancer cases are due to tobacco use, he added. 


Dr. Easther Chophy Ngullie, Dental Surgeon District Hospital, Zunheboto elaborated about the COTPA 2003 Act and gave detailed presentation about Section IV to IX. She encouraged the youths to create awareness and also said that all government offices under Zunheboto is declared as tobacco free zone.


Hantsula Yim invoked God's blessings while a special song was presented by YCM, and benediction was pronounced by Ethel Aye and Nitoka Awomi. Inali Aye chaired the programme.


An anti tobacco pledge was also taken during the programme.
