TSEMINYU, FEBRUARY 28 (MExN): The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) in Tseminyu, in collaboration with Mission Shakti and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), organized a one-day sensitization program on the rights of children from sex worker communities and other marginalized groups.
The program, which took place in Tseminyu, was opened by Chairperson Ajano Ezung, Protection Officer (NIC), who welcomed the participants. District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Janet P. Swu expressed her gratitude to the resource persons for their contributions to the initiative.
LCPO Neivotunouo Rutsa led a session on the rights of children from sex worker and marginalized communities. The discussion covered constitutional rights, legal provisions, and the societal challenges in ensuring these rights due to biases in implementation.
Sunjib Rana, Retainer Lawyer at DLSA Kohima, presented an overview of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, and emphasized the role of law enforcement in protecting children. He also explained the functions of the Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) and the legal mechanisms designed to safeguard children's welfare.
Kumari Phatisen Kath, Supervisor of the Child Helpline at DCPU Tseminyu, provided information on the 24/7 Child Helpline services, focusing on the procedures for reporting abuse and ensuring confidentiality.
Jetilo Apon, Chairman of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Tseminyu, spoke about the role of the CWC in the rehabilitation and care of children. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with law enforcement, NGOs, and community organizations to support children in need.
Victoria Kent, District Coordinator for DHEW Tseminyu, discussed government welfare schemes like PMMVY and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao under the Mission Shakti initiative. She underscored the importance of accessible welfare services for marginalized communities.
The program aimed to raise awareness of the legal rights and protections available for children from vulnerable backgrounds and enhance support structures for their well-being.
