Sensitization prog on tobacco held in Wokha

Wokha, October 29 (MExN): The District Tobacco Control Cell (NTCP) Wokha conducted a one day Training cum Sensitization Programme with Lotha Eloe Hoho, Wokha Village Eloe Hoho and Vankhosung Eloe Hoho on October 29 at the Lotha Eloe Hoho Office, Wokha.  

The resource persons of the training were Dr Robin Lotha Chief Medical Officer, Dr Meribeni Odyuo Sr. Dental Surgeon & District Nodal Officer, NTCP and Abeni R Kikon, Psycologist, Tobacco Cessation Centre, District Hospital.   Dr Lotha spoke on the Harmful Effects of Tobacco and stressed on Women’s Health and Community.  

He stated that 8-9 lakh die annually in India die due to tobacco related disease which is preventable and India has the highest number of oral cancer in the world and 90% are caused by Tobacco use.  

Dr Lotha further noted that secondhand smoke or inhaling of smoke breathed out by a smoker is equally harmful and causes diseases as well as premature death among non-smoking children and adults.  

Some Tobacco related diseases include Oral Cancer, Cardiovascular, Lung Cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary, Stroke, Cataract, brain shrinkage, Alzheimer, and Bronchitis.   Dr Odyuo spoke on Tobacco and Women’s’ Health and highlighted on COPTA 2003 while Kikon spoke on Role of Women in Tobacco Control and encouraged them to be agents in controlling tobacco usage in the community.
