Sensitization programme on inter-generational bonding held in Kohima

The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with Integrated Rural Development & Educational Organization (IRDEO) and Good Samaritan Women Society Kohima today organized a one day sensitization programme on inter-generational bonding in colleges at Capital College Kohima.


Founder and managing director Old Age Home Kohima Neithonuo Liegise talked on the topic “Elderly care.”


She said that elderly persons face various issues and problems like financial, housing , social, physical, mental , loss of appetite, loneliness and others, adding that they need love, understanding and patience.


Sharing on Old Age Home Kohima, Liegise said she has been associating with elderly persons for the last 14 years since 2005.


She said the vision of Old Age Home is to provide quality care to the elderly persons and let them aging gracefully.


She shared her dream to provide day care and recreation centre for the elderly persons. She advised the young gathering to honour the elders in the society and take care of our aged parents in the family.


Speaking on the topic “Generation gap,”UPSC former member Dr. P. Kilemsungla said due to advancement of science and technology there is wide inter-generational gap between parents and young people like believe, lifestyle, comfort, understanding etc.


She said there are many challenges between parents and children due to rapid advancement in technology leading to inter-generational gap.


She said building trust and sound relationship is very essential to bridge the gap between parents and children.


On use of social media, she advised the young students including adult to utilize wisely for their benefits.


Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) panel lawyer Vikehiepie Sirie in his talk on the topic “ Maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens Act 2007” said everyone has legal duty to take care of senior citizens.


He said under this Act any senior citizen who are neglected by the children and relative can approach Class 1 magistrate and maintenance tribunal or somebody can fight on their behalf. He also shared various provisions under this Act and punishment for the defaulters.


The programme was chaired by Kavini Theunuo secretary Good Samaritan Women Society while welcome address was delivered by Capital College principal Vezuhu Keyho.
