Mon, June 19 (MExN): Sepoy Hungnga Konyak of 164 Battalion TA (H&H) NAGA was laid to rest with full military honours at his native village Longching in Mon district’s Aboi subdivision on June 19. Hungnga was one of the jawans killed during an ambush by NSCN (K) in the outskirts of Aboi Town on June 17.
A press release from HQ IGAR (North) informed that on June 17, an Area Domination Patrol from Aboi Company Operating Base was taken out for an operational task. After completion of task, while the patrol was returning to Aboi around 3:05 pm, three km south of Aboi Town, the leading vehicle came under IED blast and was fired upon by “undergrounds”, stated the press release. In the exchange of fire, one jawan Havildar Fatey Singh Negi was killed.
Sepoy Hungnga succumbed to his injuries at 4.50 pm while he was being evacuated to Jorhat Hospital along with four other injured troops.
“During the firefight, Sepoy Hungnga Konyak sustained gunshot injury. The braveheart refused to give in despite the grave injury and continued to engage the militants,” the AR acknowledged. Hungnga is survived by his wife and six-year-old son. At his funeral service, Brig MS Sidhu, Commander 7 Sector; Col Samrat Sengupta, Commanding Officer, Tuensang Battalion; Lt Col Toshi Jamir of 164 Battalion TA (H&H) NAGA; Mankhao, OSD to Chief Minister; Thavaseelan Karunanidhy (IAS) DC, Mon; and Cha Ahung, Konyak Union president Longching Area, were in attendance at the funeral.
