Shamator, January 23 (MExN): A road safety awareness and free helmet distribution programme was conducted at Shamator on January 23 in commemoration of the National Road Safety Month.
The programme was organised by the District Road Safety Committee, Shamator, and was led by Mekato J Aye, EAC Shamator, in collaboration with the ARTO, Tuensang and the Police Department, Shamator.

A DIPR update informed that the campaign was organised under the theme, “Let the New Year begin with Road Safety, Kindness and Responsibility,” adding that  the campaign was carried out primarily as a street-level awareness drive rather than a formal indoor programme, enabling direct interaction with drivers, riders, and the general public.

At the same time, it informed that free helmets were distributed to promote the use of protective gear among two-wheeler riders. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials were also distributed to create awareness on traffic rules and safe road practices.

Banners and flex displays were installed at key locations in Shamator as part of the awareness campaign. A Street-level sensitisation drive was also conducted, during which drivers and riders were educated on the importance of safety kits and responsible use of roads.

Addressing the participants, the EAC highlighted that with the improvement of road infrastructure and a growing population in Shamator town, road safety has become a priority, while stating that such awareness programmes would be continued regularly and assured that it would not be treated as a one-time initiative.
