November 26 | Mokokchung

Under the aegis of Ungma Senso Mongdang, several thousands marched from Ungma village to Mokokchung town on a 'silent procession' today, protesting the assassination bid on Goa Governor SC Jamir on Saturday. The protestors on reaching Mokokchung town held a brief 'meeting' at the Police Point before proceeding to the Deputy Commissioner's office to submit an ultimatum.

During the meeting, a two-point resolution was also adopted by the Ungma Senso Mongdang. The USM in outright condemned the assassination bid on the life of Dr. SC Jamir, Governor of Goa, by the NSCN (IM). Further, the USM declared that it was severing all ties with the NSCN (IM) and no Ungma senso (citizen) shall cooperate with the NSCN (IM) until this issue is settled. The second resolution also took note of what it termed as the failure of the Ao Senden to undertake any tangible course of action in connection to the revoking of the 'Azha' by the NSCN (IM), despite the call given by the Ungma Senso Mongdang to the apex Ao Senden, owing to which the assassination bid on Dr SC Jamir has happened.

The USM therefore stated that it was not pleased with Ao Senden and declared its “discontentment”.

Meanwhile during the protest march some members also burnt an effigy of the NSCN (IM). The mood of the Ungma villagers could be clearly read from the writings on the placards they were carrying, some of which read, "Shoot love, not bullets," "NSCN (IM) you are good for nothing," "Go to hell NSCN (IM)" and "We are severing all our ties with NSCN (IM) from today onward."

Even as the demonstrators were proceeding towards the Deputy Commissioner's office to submit their ultimatum, some of them turned violent for reasons which could not be ascertained immediately, and marched towards the Ao Senden's office, which is housed in the Ao Kaketshir Mongdang office complex. The protestors then ransacked the Ao Senden office and fumbled it, damaging all the furniture, computer set and some documents.

Sensing the tension, all commercial establishments in the town remained closed since early morning; although no prior information was served for the closure of shops. However, the 'Salangtem/New Market' shopping area remained open, which the protestors also ransacked. The business community of the area is reported to be mulling to seek legal prosecution. A section of the protestors also marched towards the private residence of the Ao Senden President, Temjenkaba at Kumlong ward, Mokokchung. However, the district administration and police rushed to the scene and no untoward incident is reported to have occurred there. No representative of the Ao Senden could be contacted till the filing of this news. Meanwhile, the Ungma villagers led by Ungma Senso Mongdang leaders after submitting their ultimatum to the Deputy Commissioner are reported to have proceeded towards Imkongmeren Sports Complex from where the 'silent procession' formally ended.
