Shurhonieyi Soho today emerged as champion of the 24th wrestling meet of Phek Area Wrestling Association (PAWA) which took place here at Phek Town Local Ground.
Son of Niekhuhu Soho from Phek village, this is the sixth time Shurhonieyi has won the PAWA championship. He walked away with a cash prize of Rs. 70,000.
Vekuzo Vezhu, son of Late Vecuta of Khomi, came second and pocketed Rs. 50,000.
Kiiliiveto Venuh son of Late Velasu of Phek village stood 3rd and was awarded Rs. 35,000 while the 4th position winner Kewecholo Akami, son of Mukeye from Losami, received Rs. 20,000.
Earlier, gracing the meet as the chief guest, MLA Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu said that the fear of God Almighty, hard work, sincerity, strength and courage are pre-requisites to making a champion.
He said, for Chakhesangs, wrestling has always been an event which brings our people together, creating unity and oneness and brotherhood. In this, he said Chakhesang people must stand united in all fields.
Phek Deputy Commissioner Murohu Chotso graced the valedictory function as the guest of honour.
Earlier, General Secretary Zote Theke administered oath to 44 Naga style wrestlers.
Meanwhile, Zechete Mekrisuh and Veduchi Vese were among the others nominated as President and General Secretary respectively of the new team of PAWA.
