SI Jamir claims majority support

Dimapur, September 28 (MExN):  Senior Congress leader SI Jamir today claimed majority support for his candidature to  the post of president of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC). Incumbent I Imkong is no longer the committee’s leader, SI Jamir said in a press release today. The NPCC polls held on September 17 in Kohima had to be called off after some party workers pelted stones and damaged ballot boxes.

The MLA stated in the press release received here today: “Altogether 47 eligible voters of PCC Electoral College have extended their support in writing to SI Jamir and physically presented themselves to the chairman, Central Election Authority (CEA), AICC on 22nd Sept 2010. In  addition, 5  members who could not present themselves physically had voluntarily given the affirmation of their support in writing in legal papers. Hence in total, S. I. Jamir has the support of 52 members out of the total Electoral College of 81.”

The “misguided party workers” who disrupted the polls have been suspended by the Kohima DCC for anti-party activities. “The PRO had announced for a re-poll on Monday, the 20th Sept. 2010. However, the poll date was further deferred which compelled the members of the Electoral College supporting SI Jamir to take the battle to Delhi to demand for early re-poll,” Jamir said.
The Congress MLA also noted allegations of the “opposing camp” that some members have been confined against their will. These charges are totally false and baseless, Jamir said. “All the members, as responsible leaders in their own rights have the capability to exercise their own wisdom and take the right decision. All are here on their own volition,” the Congress leader explained.

Jamir said I. Imkong is no longer the NPCC’s president. “As one of the contender for the post of president, he ceased to be the president the moment he filed his nomination papers that was accepted by the PRO on Sept. 14, 2010. The members had actually expected that a neutral senior party leader might be entrusted to over-see the day-to-day party affairs till the election process is completed as no fair play can be expected from a person who himself is a candidate and the State Election Officer playing the role of a host for the opposing camp.” SI Jamir added that the chairman of CEA, AICC had earlier declared to the members that re-poll would be conducted at the earliest by deputing ‘some leaders’.
