Wokha, December 3 (MExN): The Wokha District Administration launched the signature campaign in “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP). The launching program was held on December 3 at 11:00 am at Police point junction Wokha and the campaign will continue till December 5 at Wokha police Point junction and NST junction
ADC, Wokha, Mhathung Tsanglao while delivering the key note address said BBBP programme was launched in Wokha district in October and since then series of programs and activities are being undertaken across the town and in the blocks and villages to spread awareness about the importance of safeguarding and educating the girl child.
Stating that girl child should not be considered a burden but an asset and he stressed on giving equal opportunity without any gender bias to ensure that both boys and girls become responsible and productive members of the society.
He also spoke on the pre-natal detrimental Test Act of 1994 and that undertaking test to determine the gender of the child is an offence under the law and added that we should all celebrate the birth of girl child because every creation is a gift of God.
Executive Secretary, Lotha Baptist Church Association, Rev Nyanchumo Lotha addressing the gathering expressed optimism that this scheme will covey a clear signal that time has come for us to change our mindset, eradicate all forms of discrimination against the girl child from our society and educate them.
EAC, Wokha Tumben P Tsanglao introduced the local champions during the function. The signature campaign will be led by local champions including Mhonbeni L Ezung, Yibponi T Ezung and Erenbeni P Lotha & Nsungbeni LTungoe. Mhonbeni L Ezung is the recipient of National Bravery Award in 2015 at the age of 8 for rescuing her drowning grandmother from river near Chudi village, under Wokha district. Yibponi T Ezung is the State subject topper in Social Science securing a record of 100% in the HSLC exam 2018 from Libemo Memorial School, Wokha. Erenbeni P Lotha & Nsungbeni L.Tungoe, they have a long list of achievements to their names and their partnership in playing Badminton.
The purpose of launching this campaign is to motivate, promote girl child and build up their confidence towards women empowerment. Around three thousand signatures were covered on the first day of the campaign.
