Silver Cup T20 Cricket Tournament

The much awaited and one of most prestigious cricket tourney in the state capital, 5th Edition of Silver Cup T20 Cricket Tournament commenced today at Kohima Local Ground with former MLA and member Board of Director, Nagaland State Cooperative Society, T. Abao Kire as the chief guest.

The two-week long tourney is an annual feature of the Youth Department of Nepali Baptist Church Kohima, organised under the theme ‘Peace and Unity through Cricket”.
A total of 23 teams from Kohima, Dimapur, Wokha and Mon are participating in the championship which carries cash award of more than Rs. 1 lakh for the winning teams as well as the individual performers.

Addressing the gathering and the teams during the inaugural function, Kire lauded the farsightedness of the organizers in providing a platform for the cricket lovers in the state and also promoting peace and unity as well as having fellowship together among the younger generation.

He however asked the organizers to get the tournament affiliated under Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA) in order to have better support and participation in the future.
While maintaining that many Naga youths have the potential of excelling in the game of cricket, he expressed hope that the tournament would be stepping stone for the cricketers in the state to move ahead and achieve greater heights at the regional, national and international levels.

Meanwhile, playing the inaugural match defending champions Whiskers Cricket Club, Dimapur defeated first timers Mt. Olive College, Kohima by 10 wickets.
Electing to bat first, Mt. Olive managed to score 76 runs losing 7 wickets in 20 overs with Azo contributing 27 runs. As expected, the defending champs managed to achieve the target in just 6.3 overs without losing any wickets. Their openers Bittu and Oren scored 35* and 34* runs. Skipper of Whiskers CC Wabang was adjudged the man of the match for having down 4 wickets giving just 4 runs in 4 overs.

Playing the second match, Kohima Hornbills also defeated Merhülietsa CC, Kohima by 10 wickets. Bowling first, Kohima Hornbills restricted their opponent at just 70 runs claiming 5 wickets in 20 overs. Chuba contributed 22* runs for MCC.

Chasing the target, Hornbills managed to achieve in 9.2 overs with Anga alone scoring 55* runs and was adjudged the man of the match.

The inaugural programme compered by Rachael Seyie commenced with Pastor of NBC Kohima Rev. Muktinath Khatiwada saying the invocation. Convener organizing committee and Deacon, Moon Thabah delivered the welcome address while joint secretary organizing committee Prakash Tiwari administered oath to the participating teams.
Samueal Thabah, Robin Thapa, Temjenkala and Jyoti Sunar presented the tournament anthem.
