The Mizoram government on Monday extended the interim period of Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) for another six months by bringing in 10 newcomers.

SHC was set up on July 9 last year as a result of the peace accord signed between Congress led Mizoram government and the erstwhile underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) or HPC(D).

According to the notification issued by Commissioner and Secretary of the state General Administration Department (GAD), Lalthangpuia Sailo, the interim period of the council has been extended for another six months or till elections of the council, whichever is earlier. It then appointed the sitting Executive Member Laltlamuana Hmar from Sakawrdai village to head the council as Chief Executive Member (CEM).

The new interim period of the council has come into effect from January 8, the notification added.

Lalmalsawma Darngawn was appointed as chairman, while former HPC(D) deputy army chief, Lalbiaknunga has been re-appointed as deputy chairman of the council. Apart from them, the Mizo National Front (MNF) led state government also appointed four Executive Members (EM) and seven council members including two nominated.

The state government has dropped 10 sitting members including the incumbent CEM Lalthalien and incumbent chairman LT Hmar, who is also former working chairman of the Hmar militants. A 14- member Sinlung Hills Council was constituted by the Congress led state government on July 9 last year for six months. The council was previously headed by Lalthalien, a church, who headed the HPC (D) delegation as team leader and spokesperson during peace talks between 2016 and 2018.

The interim term of the council had ended on January 9.
