DIMAPUR, MARCH 8 (MExN): The Sisterhood Network organised a celebration of the International Women’s Day at the Anchor Youth Activity Centre in Burma Camp, Dimapur on March 8. The event was attended by members of the Meitei Baptist Church, students from the New Life Bible College and members of the Sisterhood Network. The event was held under the theme ‘Helping One Another.’
Dr Atsung Aier, the head of the Community Health Programme from The Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research was the speaker for the event. He called for the people to stand up for women’s rights and stated that women would be the life givers to the future generations. He added that “women have been excelling in many spheres around the world.”
He lauded the Sisterhood Network for their efforts to organize the event. Dr Atsung also spoke about his experience as a health worker in the western part of Nepal. He commented on the domestic obligations of women and its effect on their health. He stressed on the need for proper education and healthcare to alleviate the condition of women in society.
He further talked about the rampant cases of discrimination, abuse, rape and violence against women in all parts of the world including the state. He added that the ability to say ‘yes or no’ would be the starting point for the upliftment of women’s status in this ‘male dominated’ society. He concluded by stating that society needs to strive towards justice for oppressed women.
Alongla Aier, who is in charge of the Sisterhood network, expressed her gratitude towards the attendees of the program. She urged the gathering (especially the men) to develop love and respect for the women in society.
