
Goodwill team to Pune returns
DIMAPUR, AUGUST 23 (MExN): The ‘goodwill team’ to Pune deputed by Nagaland government in the wake of reports of attack and threats to People from the North East in south Indian cities, returned Nagaland Thursday afternoon after fruitful consultations with a cross section of people including administration, police and Muslim community. Assuring that the situation was now normal, Nagaland Agriculture minister, Dr. Chumben Murry who led the team to Pune, urged students to return to their respective institutions in the south.
The team to Pune including Nagaland Agriculture minister, Dr. Chumben Murry, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Yitachu, and DIG (CID) Wapang Jamir had gone to liaise with the Maharashtra government, various organizations and communities and educational institutions following reports of attacks on north-easterners.
Interacting with media persons on their arrival at Dimapur Airport, the Agriculture minister said on the first day of their two-day visit to Pune, they interacted with student leaders and the recently formed North East Students’ Forum.
The students briefed the team on the two incidents (Aug 7 and 9) of attack on NE people, which led to mass exodus of NE people from southern cities. The meeting also deliberated on the need for setting up hostels near educational institutions exclusively for NE students.
On the second day, the team had a series of meetings with Pune administration including the Mayor of Pune and district collector, police, other organizations and communities including the Muslim community, the minister said.
Chumben lauded Pune police for conducting more than “90 meetings and interactions” in and around Pune city to diffuse the situation and also the city police’s vast network.
He also informed that the goodwill team along with NE student leaders also attended the Idd celebration on the invitation of the Muslim community. The Muslim community assured that NE people have nothing to fear about and that no harm would come to them.
The goodwill team further lauded the Naga Christian Fellowship of Pune for acting as catalyst in allaying the fears and apprehensions of the NE people in general.
