SJCCKT conducts cleanliness drive held at Saramati

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 17 (MExN): St. John’s Catholic Church Kiusam Town (SJCCKT) organized a two-day trekking expedition to Saramati Mountain, led by Rev. Fr. Thomas Toretkiu and Samuel Kurak on November 15.

The group of 11 trekkers embarked from Thanamir at 10:55 AM and reached the base camp by 4:15 PM, having navigated a challenging and treacherous journey. Along the way, the team took the initiative to carry out a cleanliness drive, aiming to promote environmental awareness and social responsibility. Their efforts focused on reducing litter and pollution, with a broader goal of enhancing air, water, and soil quality, protecting wildlife and their habitats, and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Saramati, Southeast Asia's ultra-prominent peak, rises 3,826 meters (12,552 feet) and attracts numerous trekkers each year. While many make it to the summit, the mountain's tough terrain and demanding conditions cause some to turn back.

On the first day of the trek, the cleanliness drive began at the foot of the mountain and continued up to the base camp. The team walked for six hours and 20 minutes, cleaning three rest camps along the way. The day ended with a prayer of thanksgiving, followed by a meal and rest for the night.

The second day began early, with the team setting out at 2:30 AM, each member carrying a torchlight. After a three-hour climb, they reached the summit just in time to witness the spectacular sunrise. At the top, the group celebrated a Holy Eucharist (thanksgiving Mass) for the first time ever on the mountain, with the theme “How great are your works, O Lord” (Psalm 92:5). Due to strong westward winds, they took shelter on the east side of the mountain to hold the Mass.

The team continued their cleanliness efforts at the summit before descending with memories of a successful and meaningful journey. Accompanied by two guides and three porters who assisted with carrying their luggage, the trekkers completed their journey and returned with certificates of participation.

The participants included Fr. Thomas Toretkiu, Samuel Kurak, Felix Limsheba, Philip Tsuthong, Andrew Khiungju, Felix Tothong, Lucy Kiutangshe, Maria Thripila, Lucy Khasesii, Maria Tsusang, and Repong.
