Mon, November 27 (MExN): An intensive one week Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) programme on soil conservation was conducted under Sub-Mission on Agricultural Extension (SMAE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. 

According to a press release, the programme was organized by KVK Mon in association with SAMETI, Medziphema and MANAGE, Hyderabad from November 21 to 27.

On the first day, the inaugurating programme was chaired by Dr Paihem Michui, ACTO (Animal Science), invocation was pronounced by Pastor N Bendang, Ao Baptist Fellowship, Aboi, Mon and Course Director, Imtinuksung SMS (Soil Conservation) briefed highlight about STRY training programme.

During the week long training, resource persons Imtinuksung, SMS (Soil Conservation) and Ruyosu Nakro, ACTO (Extension) delivered the lecture and power point presentation on various topics like terracing, half moon terracing, contour bunding and strip cropping, tillage practices, mulching, Green Manuring, Crop Rotation were covered. 

Besides, hands on demonstration on bamboo bunding, laying out of contour lining by using A-frame method and mulching by using paddy straw and weed substrate as measures to control soil erosion were done, where all the participants were actively involved. 

The participants were also shown videos on soil conservation measures like Mulching, Contour bunding, half-moon terracing, green manuring, cover crops and Stripe cropping. Various doubts which were raised by the participants at the training were also explained and clarified by the resource persons and also with the interest of the participant topics like vermi-composting and low cost water harvesting- jalkund were also covered.

The valedictory function was chaired by Imtinuksung, SMS (Soil Cons), and welcome speech by Dr MS Sachan, ACTO (GPB), followed by summarisation of the week long programme by the course director. 

Word of appreciation was delivered by Hanna Konyak on behalf of participants. Dr V Akashe Zhimomi, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Mon, encouraged the participants to utilise the skill and knowledge imparted through the training and demonstration for the farming community. 

The programme concluded with distribution of certificates and word of thanks by Bendangjungla, ACTO (GPB). Altogether 16 rural youths participated in the programme.
