Smart meters to shift from postpaid to prepaid from Dec 1

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 27 (MExN): The Department of Power has announced that Smart Post-paid meters in Dimapur, Kohima and Chümoukedima Divisions will be converted to Smart Pre-paid meters in a phased manner beginning December 1 in commemoration of Statehood Day. The initiative is under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

According to a press release issued by the Chief Engineer (D&R), consumers will receive an SMS on registered mobile numbers three days prior to the conversion to prepaid mode. Subsequent notifications will be sent for various events including low balance alerts, disconnection notices, successful recharge confirmations and reconnections.

To ensure uninterrupted power supply during the transition, an emergency credit of Rs.300 will be loaded at the time of conversion. The department stated that no disconnections will take place due to depletion of the emergency credit for up to five working days after conversion. The emergency credit along with any additional consumption during the first five days will be deducted from the first recharge amount, and consumers are encouraged to recharge their accounts before the emergency credit expires or the five-day period elapses.

The Department of Power informed that any outstanding dues accumulated while the meters were operating in post-paid mode will be recovered in six equal instalments over six months. Payments must be made at the cash counters of the respective Sub-divisions before the 10th of each month. Failure to pay any instalment by the 10th will result in disconnection of power supply.

Consumers can recharge their accounts at Sub-division cash counters, through the DoPN portal, or by downloading the “Smart Meter – Nagaland” app from the Google Play Store for Android devices.

The department added that the iOS version of the app will be available soon.
