Social Welfare Dept cautions against unlawful adoptions

KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 27 (MExN): The Nagaland State Social Welfare Department has informed that adoption of any children can take place only through the due process of law.

A notice from the department cautioned that any person or organization found offering or receiving any orphans, abandoned or surrendered child for the purpose of adoption without following the provisions or procedures as provided in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 would be punishable with rigorous imprisonment up to seven years and also be liable to a fine of one lakh rupees.

“Direct adoption of children from hospitals, nursing homes, and maternity homes by/through person in charge, including employees or any other person without following the procedures is a punishable offence,” it informed.

It therefore asked all concerned to strictly adhere to the provisions. For any clarification or assistance on the matter, the District Child Protection Units in the District or State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA) at the State Level may be contacted.
