‘Social work is a matter of sacrifice’

NEISSR confers Master of Social Work degree to 36 graduates

Dr Kuholi Chishi, Director, Higher Education, Government of Nagaland today called the graduates to put one’s five senses to a social worker’s perspective, letting one’s ability to go beyond understanding people and having compassion for others and said “Social work is not necessarily a white collar job, but a matter of sacrifice.”  

The Director was speaking at the Graduation cum Foundation Day of the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) today at Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.  

She pondered on how “the community at large in the past 6-7 years has begun to realize the importance of social work. Until then, for our Naga society, the concept of social work was picking up of spades and daos, cutting trees or cleaning roads.”  

Dr Chishi, pointing that the purview of social work has become a very demanding endeavor exhorted the graduates to be positive, passionate and persevere in any service or situation they are called for.  

“The deterrence to failing and difficult moments is braced through a positive attitude and the tenacity to hold on. Empower people in their ailing situations of conflict, issues, and diseases, be amongst them and be a part of them,” she implored.  

Stating that the fresh graduates are young fertile mind, Dr Chishi therefore urged them to be innovative whilst taking mundane traditional concepts in the challenging world which she called “an extra mind.”  

Prof RC Gupta, Pro Vice-chancellor, Meriema Campus, Nagaland University in his message said “service and justice are the pillar work of social work.” He pointed that only in the 1930s, Tata group first seeded Social work studies in Bombay.  

Today, India has more than 80 Social Work Institutes which, he cited has, nevertheless growing need with healthcare sector having the highest demand of social workers. He therefore, said, tolerance is one key and urged the graduates to get ready to serve anywhere and also face challenges boldly.  

Most Rev Dr James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima Diocese delivering the Chairman’s message articulated the aim of the Catholic Church “to transform the society through training with the moral example of Jesus- committing himself wholly to his people.” He stated “this is the fulfillment of the church through the graduates.”  

Rev Fr Chacko Karinthayil, Director, Shalom Rehabilation Centre, Dimapur also giving the message on behalf of the Governing Board Member stated that one can inspire people and not only teach others when we learn to recognize our worth and abilities. He further encouraged the graduates to use their degree as a mission and not only to seek employment.  

Dr CP Anto, Principal, NEISSR delivered the welcome address. A total of 36 graduates from the 4th batch of NEISSR were conferred Master of Social Work degree.
