Kohima, February 19 (MExN): The Shena Old Union, Kohima (SOUK) has expressed deep anguish and condemned the hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a civilian in January, while also commending the police for apprehending the accused after a prolonged search.
In a statement issued here, the union termed the act “cowardly,” stating that an Innova Hycross allegedly struck Akhebo Kits at 5th Mile along NH-29 in Chümoukedima on January 23, 2026.
The union expressed outrage that the perpetrator allegedly fled the scene without providing any assistance to the victim, calling it an “unforgivable crime against humanity.”
“The incident highlights a dangerous lack of empathy and respect for human life on our roads,” the SOUK stated.
The union has called upon law enforcement agencies to ensure that the accused faces the maximum penalty under Section 106(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. It also demanded that the victim's family receive prompt legal and financial compensation as mandated under the Motor Vehicles Act.
While denouncing incident, the SOUK appreciated the efforts of the police team led by the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, and the Officer-in-Charge of Chümoukedima Police Station for apprehending the accused on February 10 after a prolonged search.
The union further cautioned any individual or group against attempting to secure bail for the accused.
