Tura | October 26:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that the bottom 20 schools in Garo Hills will soon see special classes for their students so as to bring them at par with other schools in the State.

“Garo Hills has an average pass percentage in the whole region with regard to SSLC Examinations and after much deliberation and discussion with the concerned officials, we have decided to identify Bottom 20 schools from the region and provide special classes especially for those students appearing for the SSLC Examinations,” Conrad said on Saturday after inaugurating the new building of Wadanang Secondary School, Tura.

Stating that most of the schools have a four month break during winter holidays after which the students directly appear for their examinations, Conrad said that this may be one of the reasons for their bad performance. As such, he said that special classes should be given to them during this break.

Further, he informed that many things are being planned to improve the education scenario in the region so that the students utilize the facilities properly and get maximum benefit.

It may be noted here that the new building of Wadanang Secondary School, Tura was constructed under ‘Supporting Human Capital Development Project in Meghalaya’ funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Terming the project as a blessing for the students, for the people of Wadanang locality as well as Garo Hills and Meghalaya state as a whole, Conrad said this is the appropriate time to thank all the people who were instrumental in bringing the project including the Ministers of the previous government, former Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Zenith Sangma and former Local MLA, Noverfield R Marak, the present government and all the officers concerned for completing the project successfully.

This project focuses on improvement of secondary education, infrastructure and skill development. Under this project, scores of government aided secondary and higher secondary schools in the state are being upgraded with infrastructure which will improve the overall learning environment for the students and so far about 14 such schools have been completed in the region.
