The deceased victim, identified as Abdul Basit (35 years), was working as a salesperson at a shop in New Market. He was at the targeted pharmacy buying medicine when the explosive was hurled, the CP said.
The explosive, suspected to be a Chinese grenade, reportedly landed just behind Basit as he was facing the counter. The four others injured included three employees of the pharmacy and a man, who was passing by. They were identified as Iheiling Newmai (22 years), Dilwar Hussain (40 years), Bidhan Biwas (40 years) and Mithun Biswas (42 years). The CP said that Newmai was returning home from work, while adding that the injuries of the four were not life threatening.
Stating that a Special Investigation Team has been formed headed by the ADCP (Crime), the CP quoting preliminary inquiry of remnants of the explosive found at the scene indicated it was of Chinese make.
Stating that the police are in the process of preparing evidence collected from the scene for forensic examination, the CP said, “Further details of the assailants are being looked into.” As far as the people involved were concerned, the CP said two persons came in a car. “We are in the process of examining the motive. It would be premature at this stage to attribute any particular reason,” he said, while adding, “We haven’t ruled out anybody.”
While appealing the public “to continue to repose faith and trust in the capabilities of the police,” the CP held that the incident should not be viewed as a deterioration of law and order. “All out effort will be made to ensure the perpetrators are brought to meet the ends of justice,” he assured.

Dimapur strike affects normal life
Kohima, May 30 (IANS): A 12-hour general strike on Tuesday called by traders in Dimapur town in protest against the death of one person in a bomb blast hit normal life in the town.
“There have been no untoward incidents so far,” police said.
Normal life in Dimapur, 74 km from here, was thrown out of gear due to the strike that began from 6 a.m. Police and eye-witnesses said two miscreants travelling in a car fled after hurling the bomb inside the chemist’s shop on Nyamo Lotha Road around 7.15 p.m. on Monday.
Nidhu Biswas, the pharmacy owner, denied having received any extortion threat from any underground organisation. However, the police officer said: “We are not ruling out anything for the time being.” An FIR has been registered and investigation is on. So far no outfit has made any claim about the blast.
