Dimapur: Following the arrests of auto-rickshaw drivers for overloading passengers yesterday, the Dimapur Traffic Police is planning to implement the recent notification on speed limits to promote further awareness among the public. Discussions have been made to install display boards with the respective speed limits notified for various categories of vehicles plying in and around Dimapur. Important entrances, junctions and highways will be the target points for the installation of these display boards, the DSP Traffic, Yanger Aier told The Morung Express.
It was also known that intense monitoring of the speed limits rules will be difficult at the moment as the process will involve both cooperation from the public and more manpower in the Traffic. It may be mentioned that the Dimapur Traffic Police has only around 67 traffic personnel apart from the Home guards.
“The public will gradually learn and obey. We don’t expect 100% response and awareness at the moment (during any awareness drive), the DSP said.
Further, the DSP cautioned the auto-drivers that surprise checking of overloading passengers will be conducted very soon. The seized auto-rickshaws are presently at East Police Station. In this connection, the DSP informed that due to limited space and unsuitable location of the Traffic Control, the seized auto-rickshaws are at East Police Station. “The arrests and investigations are completely under the Traffic. However, the space is unsuitable and the location is risky to keep the vehicles”, said the DSP. Meanwhile, normal frisking like helmet check, use of dipper at night, etc will be carried regularly, he informed.
Further, the DSP also disclosed that average rate of accidents in a month has been reported to be 50-60 accidents including every type of vehicles so far. To fight this alarming rate of road mishaps, the public should comply with the awareness programmes of the traffic and follow the traffic rules accordingly, he urged.
