Speed limits revised on key Dimapur routes

No parking for heavy vehicles on highways

Dimapur, June 1 (MExN): The Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, has fixed new speed limits for motor vehicles on key routes in the district, effective from June 1, 2026, in the interest of public safety.

According to an order issued by the Commissioner, the maximum speed limit on the stretch from Zion Hospital Junction to Chümoukedima on NH 29 has been set at 50 km per hour, while vehicles within Dimapur city area cannot exceed 30 km per hour. On the new four-lane NH 29 bypass from Kushiabill towards Chathe Bridge (Patkai/Seithekiema), the speed limit has been fixed at 80 km per hour.

The order has been issued under Section 112(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, as amended by the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019, and as authorised by the State Government vide notification TPT/MV/16/2017 dated May 22, 2025.

In compliance with Supreme Court guidelines, no heavy vehicles, trucks or commercial vehicles shall be permitted to be parked or stopped on national highways except at designated bays, lay-bys or wayside amenities. In case of a breakdown or emergencies, hazard lights and reflective triangles must be used to warn other vehicles.

The Commissioner has advised the general public to strictly adhere to the prescribed speed limits and comply with all traffic rules and regulations, warning that defaulters will be booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act or the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.
