Spread awareness on victim compensation: Justice Jamir

KOHIMA, JULY 4 (MExN): Justice LS Jamir, Judge, Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman Nagaland State Legal Services Authority today urged Panel Lawyers not to let difficulty be a barrier in achieving success, especially in helping victims of crime.  

He stated this while handing over an amount of Rs. 1 Lakh each to two rape victims under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 at his office chamber, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench on July 4.  

He meanwhile lauded the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority and the Panel Lawyer for taking up the issue with care and passion. Justice Jamir further encouraged civil societies to identify victims and spread awareness on such benefit.  

A press note from the NSLSA informed that Lekhono Lese, Southern Angami Women President also extended gratitude to Nagaland State Legal Services Authority for helping the victims.  

Panel Lawyer NSLSA, Neiteo Koza who took up the cases, informed that the compensation was recommended through Kohima District Legal Services Authority and forwarded to Relief and Rehabilitation Department on January 2017.  

She hoped that the concerned departments would take up such cases on priority basis in a timely manner.  

Apprising on the maximum limit of compensation in case of loss or injury under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012, Koza pointed out that for loss of life the maximum limit of compensation is Rs. 2 Lakh; loss of any limb of part of body resulting 80% or above handicap is Rs 1 Lakh; loss of any limb or part of body resulting 40% and below 80% handicap is Rs. 75,000; rape of minor is Rs. 1 Lakh, and for rape is Rs. 50,000.  

She further informed that for rehabilitation the maximum limit of compensation is Rs. 50,000; loss of any limb or part of body resulting below 40% handicap is Rs. 75,000; loss of injury causing severe mental agony to women and child victims in case like human trafficking is Rs. 1 Lakh and simple loss or injury to child victim is Rs. 20,000.
