SSA review highlights education for all

Kohima, October 31 (MExN): The two day Review Meeting on SSA with District Mission Authorities (DMAs) and NGOs concluded at Zonal Council Hall, Kohima today with the Principal Secretary School Education Banuo Z. Jamir urging all stakeholders of education for partnership towards attaining the goal for “Education for All.”

Describing education as partnership involving the community and various departments of the State, the Principal Secretary called for their active participation towards improving the human resource development in the State. Asking the representatives of Health & Family Welfare, Social Welfare, PHED, RD and DUDA who were present at the meeting for convergence wherever possible, the Principal Secretary viewed that education alone is not confined to the affairs inside the classrooms. “A collective and concerted effort should be made from all departments to ensure that students are taught in a hygienic environment with proper toilets and drinking water facility,” she added.

On the issue of huge number of untrained teachers, she said that the school education department alone is not responsible for improving the education system but required the support from all members of the community and it is the community that should demand for trained teachers.   

Lamenting on the inconsistent data and the problems it posed at all levels of implementation of policies, the Principal Secretary opined that the backlog in supervision and monitoring formats should be updated in order to obtain required and satisfactory information of data. She emphasized on the need for setting up a “think-tank” with the involvement of departments and masses and sought suggestions from the participants.

She also said that a State level committee has been constituted by the Government where every citizen of the state can lodge complaints and suggestions on the implementation of SSA scheme in the state. The Principal Secretary however urged the people to also highlight the good practices adopted by the community and document them so that a positive attitude is created among the people.     

The meeting deliberated on the role of NGOs in the implementation of Alternative Schooling and suggestions and feedbacks were given from all the representatives of 22 agencies carrying out the programme for the current year. The Principal Secretary lauded those NGOs which had initiated vocational learning in their centres and urged the other implementing agencies to try doing the same.

Participating in the discussion, RD Director Metsubul said that our society lacks dignity of labour and urged the concerned departments to put this in school curriculum both in theory and practical.

Discussions on “Project Care” undertaken by the NSF and sensitization of Girl child undertaken by the NMA were also held. Representatives from the NBCC and ENSF also suggested means and measures to improve the education standard in the State so as to ensure that quality education is attained. The ENSF assured of their cooperation and support wherever required to bring abou t improvement of education system.

The two day meeting which was chaired by the Mission Director, SMA, SSA Nagaland, Angau I.Thou began by deliberating on the action taken report of the previous Review Meeting. Other issues that were deliberated upon included the progress of Civil Works in all the districts, Mid Day Meal, teachers training, DISE and Computer Aided Learning under SSA. Officials from the Directorate of School Education, departments of Health & Family Welfare, Social Welfare, PHED, RD and DUDA and SCERT, representatives from the NBCC, NSF, ENSF and implementing agencies of Alternative Schooling were present at the two-day meeting.
