Tuensang, August 16 (MExN): St Christopher School, Chessore in Tuensang district won the Golden Award from the Pallikkutam National Awards for Innovation in Education 2020.
St Christopher School is an Upper Primary (Class VIII) Catholic School established by the Diocese of Kohima (Nagaland) on March 21, 2015 at Chessore Village. Over 56 schools from 16 states all over the country participated in the contest. The objective of the award was to recognize educational institutions engaged in bringing about disruptive innovations in education, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.
According to a press release from the school, during this COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, teaching and learning have taken a new norm. St Christopher School, Chessore was quick enough to adapt to the new way of teaching and learning through various innovations, it stated.
Besides providing class notes through WhatsApp and printed copies, conducting tests (online and offline), giving assignments, and visiting houses of students to check the notes and to follow up the studies, the teachers also initiated various literary and talent competitions for the students.
“The main idea is to keep the students occupied and engaged and to bring out the innate qualities and talents of the children,” the release stated.
The literary competitions included Mathematical Puzzle, Mental Aptitude, General Knowledge, Drawing and Coloring, Handwriting (English and Yimchunger), Essay Writing, Folk Story Writing(English and Yimchunger), Moral Story Writing(English and Yimchunger), Composing Poem (English and Yimchunger), Translation (English to Yimchunger and Yimchunger to English). The best items will be chosen for the School Magazine which the school is planning to print out when the lockdown period ends, the school informed.
The talent competitions include Recitation of Folk Stories (English & Yimchunger), Recitation of Moral Stories, Hair Styling, Dance (English), Dance (Traditional), Traditional Attire, Poetry in Action, Action Song, Singing (English &Traditional), Unique Talent Show and Speech (English & Yimchunger).
The best performing students' videos will be uploaded in the School YouTube p[age and they will be given prizes when the school reopens, the release added.
Besides these activities, the teachers are also giving more exciting activities to students such as arts and crafts, treasure hunt, weekly letter writing, and helping with daily chores at home etc
The school expressed hope that these activities would enhance the students’ God-given talents and prepare them for the coming year while also “alleviate the feeling that the Academic Year 2020 is lost.”
