Dimapur, August 11 (MExN): St John College (SJC) Dimapur, observed International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (IDWIP) on August 9.

The event saw a widespread array of vibrant colors, patterns, stylistic techniques, designs and artworks among others, as the students wore their traditional attire, or a modern fusion, to the college on this special occasion, a press release issued by the College stated.

“Unity in diversity was truly reflected amongst the college students acting as the custodians of their individual tradition, culture and heritage hailing from not only different tribes and parts of Nagaland but also other states,” the release said.

A brief award programme was conducted, which started with an introduction speech throwing light on the significance of the day by Kalika D Swu of BA 5th semester. Wungstukiu of BA 1st semester reflected on the experiences of the English Department, who recently conducted a field trip focusing on local indigenous languages.

Special prizes for the best dressed students (male and female) were awarded. The winners for the best dressed female were Swagata Deb of BSc 1st and Akatoli Assumi of BA 1st semester and the best dressed male were Hutoka and Daniel, both of BA 1st semester.

The event concluded with words of wisdom from the Administrative Head of the College Peter J Banks. Peter greeted the students in Scottish Gaelic before encouraging the students to remember their roots and to make effort to preserve their indigenous languages.
