During the fourteenth session of the twelfth Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the nomenclature of the St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) was changed to St. Joseph University, Nagaland. This change was based on the request made by the Governor PB Acharya “for amendment pertaining to the name of the University from St. Joseph Catholic University to avoid opening University in the name of any religion.” This was written on a statement of object and reasons, dated November 19 by Deo Nukhu, Parliamentary Secretary, Higher and Technical Education.
In a meeting held on November 18, the cabinet discussed on the grounds of educational institutions named by any particular religion which may give precedent to establish the university in the name of different religion. Although there was no bar for such nomenclatures (citing examples of Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University), the cabinet mentioned that the sponsor DMI Foundation did not object to the request of changing of name, therefore the cabinet approved the proposal to change the nomenclature from St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) to St. Joseph University Nagaland.
The motion for consideration and passing of amendments to the St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) Bill, 2016 under Rule 100 was moved by Deo Nukhu, Parliamentary Secretary, Higher and Technical Education for the amendments recommended by the Governor on Bill, 2016 which was taken into consideration and passed.
The request for introduction and passing of St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) Bill, 2016 in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly was received from Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima and Chairman of all the Catholic Educational Institutions in Nagaland and was passed in the NLA on July 14, 2016. The main objective of the university is to establish and incorporate a private university in the State with emphasis on providing high quality and industry relevant education in the areas of Accounting, Financial Analysis and Management, Business Management, Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Agriculture, Architecture, Law, Education, Medical Sciences and related areas approved by university from time to time sponsored by the DMI Foundation, Nagaland and to provide for matters connected therewith or incidental there to.
