The St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) Bill 2016 was passed on July 14 during the Monsoon session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

While passing the St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) Bill 2016, Deo Nukhu, Parliamentary Secretary for Higher and Technical Education highlighted concerns on the establishment of Universities in Nagaland. Nukhu mentioned that in the past the Assembly had passed bills on two universities - Amity University and Nagaland Global Open University.

While the Nagaland Global Open University has been established, Amity University has failed to invest in Nagaland. Since the three-year time period for implementation of the University has already passed, Nukhu has suggested on repealing the bill passed on Amity University. With the growing need for Universities in the State, Nukhu hoped that better education would begin with the establishment of new universities.

Expressing concern over the failure to properly establish Universities, Er Levi Rengma, Parliamentary Secretary for Housing, hoped the present St. Joseph Catholic University (Nagaland) Bill 2016 will not be another failure of such kind. Rengma stated that the opinion of the government should be taken into account before the Bill is brought into the House, and that the Government should be able to nominate a designated officer as a special invitee in the Board of Governors.

Since most of the local students are from economically weak background, Rengma mentioned that the students may not be able to avail the opportunity if the fees are expensive, therefore suggested the need to have mechanisms to check the fee structures. Deo Nukhu assured that if there are any amendment required on the Bill, it can be submitted separately in due course of time.

With an aim to provide high quality and industry relevant education, the St. Joseph Catholic University will offer 223 courses in the areas of accounting, financial analysis and management, applied sciences, medical sciences, engineering and technology, agriculture, law, education etc. The location for the University is at Ikishe village, Dimapur.
