Jalukie, June 26 (MExN): The St. Xavier College observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 in collaboration with Shalom, Chümoukedima, DAPCU, Peren, AR 36, in response to the call of the United Nation (UN) to raise awareness of the major problems of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
The staff and the students took a bicycle and bike rally from the college campus to Jalukie town with placards and banners with a message to fight against drug abuse and making the society drug-free.
Rev. Fr. Chacko, Director Shalom Rehab Chümoukedima, led the input session addictions like drug abuse and alcoholism. He asserted that “each have the freedom to choose the good or abuse. Neither alcohol nor any type of drugs is bad in itself because God created them but one should learn to use the thing He created meaningfully.”
In their testimonials, Apong and Michael, counsellors’ Shalom Rehab shared that just because tobacco products are easily available in our area one shouldn’t take into account as luring. They spoke of their experience of beginning to be addicted through these simple products. “The consumption of local wine, cigarettes and other substance gradually led me to taking strong alcoholic drugs to the maximum that I dropout my studies,” stated Apong. They urged the students and the public to be aware of the ill effect of drugs and resist to it by saying “No, to drugs.”
SDO (Civil), Lankonsen addressed the public alerting the growing drug-abuse and the necessity to resist the abuse with a personal effort.
