Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary for Geology & Mining, I&FC and Border Affairs, Y Patton, has warned that immediate action including eviction drives would be carried out against individuals and government employees encroaching on government land.
The Parliamentary Secretary caution comes in the wake of reported random encroachment of land and buildings belonging to state Irrigation & Flood Control (I&FC) department in Dimapur. On Saturday last (Aug 18), the Parliamentary Secretary accompanied by I&FC officers conducted a spot verification of the department’s land and property at Medziphema, 4th Mile, LRC colony, PWD colony and ADC court.
During the inspection, it was found out that even I&FC department employees who were allotted quarters were also involved in encroaching departmental lands. The encroachment reportedly started way back in the year 2000 with “departmental staff” as main encroachers.
Taking serious note of the encroachment, the Parliamentary Secretary said that immediate action would be taken against the defaulters. Asserting that the I&FC department would be erecting walls to demarcate the department land, Patton at the same time also urged the district administration to immediately cancel land allotment and to carry out eviction drive.
Patton informed that in 2010, the district administration had cancelled land allotment and evicted 16 of the 17 individuals illegally encroaching on the department’s land at Medziphema.
The Parliamentary Secretary said he has already informed the administration in Medziphema to evict the last encroacher who was still occupying the land even though the allotment order had been cancelled.
Meanwhile, Patton who also visited the office of the executive engineer of Irrigation & Flood Control (Dimapur division), located at Agri-Expo site found to his surprise that the office of the EE was functioning from a “sugarcane godown” after the erstwhile office was demolished during the Agri-Expo in 2010.
Informing that the EE office was dismantled for road-widening purpose during the last agri-expo, Patton however said that till date the Agriculture department has not made any other alternative arrangement for the I&FC office complex.
