State Government issues order on dog meat ban

Kohima, July 5 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland has issued an official notification banning the import and sale of dog in meat in the state.


According to the order which was issued by Nagaland Chief Secretary on July 4, ‘commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets’ and ‘commercial sale of dog meat in markets and dine in restaurants’ have been banned in the state.


“Any person found violating this order shall be liable to be punished under section 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code 1860 and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and/or any such other provisions of law as may be applicable,” the order stated.


It also stated that the order will be ‘severally as well as jointly’ enforced by the District Administration, Police, Municipal Administration and the Veterinary & Animal Husbandry department. 


Meanwhile, in a separate order issued by Deputy Secretary, Government of Nagaland, C Khanyang Imlong, the Dimapur Deputy Commissioner has been directed to identify and establish a temporary Animal Shelter for rescued animals ‘till such time permanent arrangements are made.’
