State govt announces relief for fire victims

Dimapur, November 17 (MExN): The state government has announced relief of Rs. 1 Lakh to the next of kin of each of the three persons who died in the fire that swept across a slum near Burma Camp on November 25. Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio announced the compensation, in a message today. Rs. 1 Lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased would be given while Rs. 17 lakh has been announced for relief operations.  The chief minister has expressed pain at the tragedy. “I am deeply pained to learn of the devastating fire that broke out at East Block Colony of Burma camp, Dimapur on the late night of Tuesday the 15th November, 2011,” the chief minister said in his message.
“What was more shocking to know was about the death of three persons and of the many injured and thousands rendered homeless. While the government is taking all requisite measures to rush necessary help and support to the unfortunate victims of the incident, my heart goes out to the relatives and family members of the deceased and all those affected by the calamitous fire,” Rio said.
Meanwhile, Home minister Imkong L Imchen accompanied by Parliamentary Secretary for Relief and Rehabilitation, S Heno, handed the amount to Relief and Management Committee constituted by the district administration under the supervision of SDO (C), Dimapur, at the DC conference hall on Thursday in presence of district administration, police, representatives of Dimapur Chambers of Commerce and Industries (DCCI), various organizations and GBs and elders of Burma Camp.
Of the 20 lakhs, the Home minister personally handed Rs. 1 lakh each to the immediate relatives of the three persons killed in the inferno.  The remaining amount will be distributed to the affected victims either on Saturday or Sunday.
Imchen in his address urged the relief committee to distribute the government’s aid in a judicious manner so that none of the affected families are deprived.  The minister also requested the district administration, Dimapur Municipal Council and various NGOs to create awareness among the public to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.
Heno in his address conveyed sympathy of the state chief minister to the affected victims.  DC Dimapur, Hushili Sema, thanked the state government and various NGOs for the concern shown and help extended to victims of the fire tragedy.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Governor, Nikhil Kumar, also donated Rs 2.5 lakhs to the fire victims.  Earlier, SDO (C), Dimapur, Atokhe, gave an update on the progress of the relief committee.  DCCI president Hokivi Chishi, representatives of various organizations including Lions Club and others also spoke on the occasion.  It may be mentioned that three persons were killed and around 3000 people rendered homeless in the inferno.
