KOHIMA (MExN): Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, Minister for Education, Economics & Statistics, Planning and Co-operation disclosed today that the State Government had signed a memorandum with the Institute of Charter Financial Analysts of India and that the drafting of the act was already under process which would be addressed in the next session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He also said that the Global University of Delhi had proposed to open a university in Nagaland and that his department was considering the option. This information was made known while delivering his speech as the Chief Guest at the 10th Freshers’ Social Cum Sports Meet ’05 of Oriental College, Kohima.
Dr. Shürhozelie while addressing the students also said that according to the latest statistics there were 16,885 colleges in the country, out of which Nagaland had only 59 colleges, ‘which shows that comparatively we are lacking far behind’. Based on last year’s statistics he further informed the number of students in Nagaland was about 21,588, which was only 1.10% of the total population, which reflected the ‘backwardness of Nagaland in the field of education’. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu stressed that while it was time to concentrate on quality education, more facilities have to be included to attract more students. He further informed that his department has already decided to sponsor four more colleges this year in Kiphiri, Longleng and Peren district. He said that the Central Government had granted Rs. 35 crores for development of colleges and Rs. 10 crores for Kohima campus alone. In this regard he confirmed that contractors had been selected and the necessary amount would be utilized in creating more facilities and greater accommodation from Higher Educational level. He also expressed satisfaction that sports had taken an important position in education and that sports must be encouraged in universities in building up healthy individuals.
Dr. Ketshukietuo Dzüvichu, Principal of Oriental College, gave a brief history of the college in which he stated that it was established in June 1996 with the aim to cater to the needs of the student living in Seikhazou, a sprawling locality within the city of Kohima, with a sizeable population who otherwise would have trudged two kilometers away for their studies. He said that the college was being sponsored by a group of sponsoring body of the Christian Youth Organization of Christian Revival Church under the chairmanship of Vi-u Belho. He also expressed happiness that the college over the pass percentage of the college which was improving yearly. The college has topped in Logic in the higher secondary level of Nagaland board for 5 consecutive years and topped in Tenyidie for 2 consecutive years. He added that the college also actively promotes sports and extra- curriculum activities apart from academic activities.
Talking to The Morung Express, Khriesatuo Kerets, Secretary of the sponsoring body, said that the college in terms of hostel fees was inexpensive in comparison to other private institutions and for which it had been attracting students from many areas of the State. That till now the money from the institute was being utilized for the development of the college and that they were under contract with the Revival Church, Kohima Village. After 22 years the land and the infrastructure would be given back to the church.
The function included welcome songs by the EU OCK and a special number by Avito, a student. The welcome address was delivered by Dzüseneizo, General Secretary, Students’ Council, while the vote of thanks was offered by Alo, Asst. General Secretary, OCSU. Speeches on behalf of the seniors and Freshers were also delivered.
