The State Vigilance Commission, Nagaland has filed a suo moto case on the appointment of MKR Pillai as a ‘Consultant’ to the Nagaland Police.

The filing of the case comes in the backdrop of the Nagaland state government maintaining stoic silence over the simultaneous raids and huge wealth uncovered from the establishments of Pillai by the investigation wing of the Income Tax in Kochi on June 8.

A senior Nagaland state Vigilance officer disclosed Tuesday on condition of anonymity that a suo moto FIR was registered at the Vigilance Police Station, Kohima on June 12.

As stated by the officer, the filing of the case was the result of “demand from the people that the Vigilance should take up Suo Moto case on the appointment of Pillai as consultant.” The designation of Pillai is entered as “MTO/Consultant” in the official online directory of the Nagaland Police Headquarters.

Stating that the investigation would involve the examining of “a number of factors,” the officer added that the charges were filed under “Criminal Conspiracy, Cheating and section 34 of the IPC.”

The officer further maintained that the investigation will be confined to the state of Nagaland and would examine the nature of the appointment and the circumstances under which it was made. As for the “unaccounted wealth” part, the officer said the Income Tax is already on the job and the Nagaland state Vigilance cannot take over the job from them.

Asked what would be the implications for the state police department and the Nagaland state government as the Vigilance investigation proceeds, the official stated it would be wise not to speculate at this stage.

Meanwhile, DGP, Nagaland, LL Doungel when contacted said that he was still to get official intimation about the filing of the FIR by the Vigilance as he was away in Mizoram to attend an official meeting and was on his way back to Kohima today.

Questions further remain unanswered on the mysterious Nagaland Police truck that was reported to have been found at one of Pillai’s properties in Pandalam, Kerala during the IT raids. Asked on this, the DGP said the report too is still to be ascertained.

Pillai is reported to have returned to Kohima on June 12.
