Statistics say high voter turnout

An estimated 83.29 % polling was recorded for the 59 Assembly seats, which by and large passed-off peacefully. A total of 59 Assembly seats went to polls today, while polling in one seat- 53rd Tuensang Sadar-I was adjourned following the demise of Congress candidate P. Chuba Chang. The fate of 185 candidates, which includes two women, would have been decided during today’s voting. Counting will take place on February 28.

State Chief Electoral officer J. Alam informed that the provisional figures of voting as Kiphire – 96.95 % , Longleng - 96 %, Pughoboto 94.82 %, Tuensang – 93.89 %, Zunheboto -87.50 %, Mon – 86.27 %, Peren– 85 %, Dimapur -82.98 % ,Kohima – 77.44 % , Phek-68.84 %, Mokokchung – 81.45%  and Wokha -48.05 %. The CEO informed that the voting percentage might increase as the final figures are still awaited till the time of briefing media persons. 

The CEO said that polling has been adjourned in three polling stations in the districts of Phek, Zunheboto and Dimapur and now has been recommended for re-poll to the ECI. However the final outcome was awaited from ECI. He said that EVMs including some papers were damaged in 17th Chizami A/C (Phek district) under Zhavame P/S so polling has been adjourned.

He stated that under Zunheboto district, polling in Hoshepu P/S under 34 Aghunato A/C could not start because of some armed miscreants. Under Ghaspani-11 A/C (Toshibo Village P/S) polling had to be adjourned as there was clash between the supporters of two parties

J. Alam said that polling was by and large peaceful and no major incident of mob violence or clashes was reported throughout the State. Extending appreciation to one and all for ensuring free and fair elections, Alam expressed happiness that 2013 election was the most peaceful election in recent Nagaland’s recent memory.

State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, cast his vote in his native village Tuophema village under 11 Northern Angami -11 Assembly constituency. Speaker Nagaland Legislative Assembly was the first to press EVM at 23rd Kohima Science College under 8th Western Angami Assembly seat.

Leader of Opposition Tokheho cast his vote from 7th Nahabari PS under Dimapur-III A/C, while State Congress President SI Jamir cast his vote at 7 Lake View colony under Dimapur-II A/C.

It may be mentioned that the Election Commission of India had put Nagaland under ‘unprecedented security coverage’, with 250 companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) deployed to the respective polling stations for free and fair conduct of polls. 14000 polling personnel were also put into service for the conduct of the polls. The State has 2024 polling stations spread over 12 electoral districts.
