‘Stories’- Writer’s workshop held in Mokokchung

The Mokokchung Town Baptist Church (MTBA) Youth Department organised a writer’s workshop ‘Stories’ at MTBA Conference Hall, Mokokchung with Dr Limasenla Jamir, Assistant Professor, Fazl Ali College and T Senka Ao, 2022 Padmashree recipient for Literature & Education, as the resource persons. The workshop was initiated by the Contact Team of MTBA Youth Department.

The first session of the workshop was on writing skills, where Dr Limasenla Jamir spoke on the basics of writing, which included different types of writing, how to plan one’s approach to writing, and basic techniques like using the right grammar, using gender accurate language and editing one’s work. She also spoke on the basics of photo journalism and how to write a news story.

In the second session, T Senka Ao focused on writing themes, narration and publishing. He started his talk by explaining creative writing, which he said is the highest form of writing in the literature world. He also said that a piece of creative writing will never be lost.

Stressing the importance of writing themes in a book, he said the value of the book is measured by the theme of the book. On the topic of narration, he focused primarily on language, the challenges of writing in Ao and how to find ways to express words with tonal variations in written form.

He further spoke on the basics of publishing, adding that self-publishing is not feasible in Nagaland as most times, it does not pay dividends.

Kika Jamir, Member, Contact Team MTBA Youth Department sharing about the purpose of the workshop said, ‘writing serves as a means of self-expression and that the workshop was intended to provide the younger generation with a valuable opportunity to cultivate their skills.’ 

“The workshop aimed to facilitate the refinement of essential skills, including language proficiency and clarity, for all participants. Moreover, for the passionate few dedicated to the art of writing, our aspiration is to elevate their expertise by connecting them with accomplished individuals in the field on a personal level,” he added.

The workshop concluded with vote of thanks by Imsuyanger, Member, Contact Team, MTBA Youth Departments.
