While waiting for special trains to return home, a group of stranded Nagas in Ahmedabad have been left worried that their landlord will evict them as they are unable to pay rent.
Around 14 youths who live together in a rented apartment had left their jobs earlier this month in the hope of coming back to Nagaland. However, without money, they are now confronted with the burden of rent and procuring daily essentials. “We are scared if the landlord chases us out,” Martemsu told The Morung Express.
The youths, many of whom worked as customer service executives, were anxious to know when the trains are going to be arranged, Martemsu said, adding that their names were in the returnees’ list.
When contacted on Sunday, government authorities told this newspaper that they did not wish to comment on the status of special trains bound for Nagaland.
Stranded Nagaland citizens across the country have been asking the Nagaland government to arrange transportation for them since the Railways started partial resumption of passenger train services.
Earlier on May 20, the All Cities COVID-19 Task Force for Nagaland- a collective of 19 NSUs spread across the country stated it had not received “even a single communiqué” from the state government with regard to arrangement for special trains, and quarantining arrangements, among others.
The NSUs put across the “unprecedented issues and challenges” faced by the stranded citizens, and requested the state government to arrange transportation without any delay.
