Women street vendors receive umbrella from Governor

In tune with the Nagaland Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2019 for Nagaland Municipal and Town Councils, the rights and entitlements of street vendors especially women folks are receiving recognition, Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya mentioned today. Adding that “the strength of the link lies in the weakest,” during the programme for distribution of umbrellas to street vendors at the KMC office in Kohima.
He told the women vendors who were attending the event that “they are entrepreneurs and service givers,” while also juggling the role of a homemaker and caregiver.
The scheme enacted in April this year, will form a Street Vending Committee and streamline necessary actions to be taking up for issuing certificate of vending for new sites and street vendors; pass directions and orders for renewal, suspension and cancellation of certificate; issue manners of cancellation; chart fees; categorize street vending; vouch for relocation and eviction of street vendors whenever necessary among others.
These subject areas will help in ensuring security and help them in availing benefits from the government, the governor said and called the street vendors to open bank account through jan dhan yojana or seek help in availing loans.
The distribution of umbrellas is a small gesture, but this is a way to show that we care and appreciate the services, he told the women vendors attending the event. The governor also cited that there are many grievances of the women vendors further adding that these sections of the society are those with the greatest patience.
Earlier, Dr Neikesale Kire, Advisor Rural Development, Government of Nagaland lauded the social service and conveyed that doing good in the society should reverberate to many areas.
In the lucky draw administered by Rajeev Dong Director Incharge, Rajya Sainik Board, 10 women street vendors were given umbrellas.
Earlier, the Street vendors rule was briefed in detail by S Takatuba Aier, State Mission Director and Secretary SUDA.
The programme was chaired by Kohima Deputy Commissioner Anoop Khinchi and welcome address was delivered by KMC Administrator Kovi Meyase.
