April 30 is World Veterinary Day

Veterinary Hospital Kohima

World Veterinary Day was started by the World Veterinary Association in the year 2000 to celebrate the contribution of Veterinarians to the health and well beings of animals, people and the environment around the world.

The importance of a Veterinary doctor is felt all over the world for the kind of impact they have created for the animals health care, prevention, various control and eradication programmes against infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, re-emerging diseases, welfare activities and thus making the world a better and safer place for animal and human to co-exist.

Veterinarians also play a vital role in major sector of the society be it in; Food security; Meat and dairy industry; Poverty alleviation; Scientific researches; Employment generation etc.

Keeping in mind the huge diversity of works in different fields of Veterinary practices and the crucial role a Veterinarian has to play, the World Veterinary Association has given the theme for this day; Strengthening Veterinary Resilience. It is a vital reminder of the importance of resilience for a Veterinarian. Healthy animals require healthy advocates. Resilient Veterinarians are better equipped to handle the daily challenges and crises that may occur in their practices. Developing resilience also enables us to thrive both professionally and also personally.

As we mark the celebration of this World Veterinary Day and also as a responsible citizen it is necessary to highlight some of our basic duties. 1) Motivating young people to take up the noble Veterinarian's profession and various related Veterinary industries 2) Improving the living condition of animals that live with us or those homeless/abandoned ones 3) Creating awareness to the people about various zoonotic diseases and the importance of routine immunization of our animals /pets 4) Preventing animal cruelty 5) Creating awareness to the public to recognize and support the works of a Veterinarian May this day be a reminder for all of us to embark upon Strengthening Veterinary Resilience in order to thrive stronger in the field of Veterinary practices and strive towards excellence.

Happy World Veterinary Day!
