STSU questions poor workmanship at Anganwadi Centers in Shamator

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 16 (MExN): The Shamator Town Students’ Union (STSU) has written to the Child Development Project Officer (ICDS), Shamator, Tuensang, seeking clarification with regard to poor workmanship in upgradation works at selected Anganwadi Centers (AWC) in Shamator.

A press note from the STSU demanded that the clarification be made within a period of seven days from the issue of this notice.

It informed that the STSU carried out spot inspection at the selected Anganwadi centers on December 9 and found that the works were carried out “randomly and recklessly.” “The responsible department should have provided necessary instructions to be strictly adhered to while executing all the up-gradation works being undertaken at the selected Anganwadi centers under your establishment/supervision. However, the STSU is dismayed to find the improper and lack of quality workmanship owing to the reason best known to the department and the responsible contractor/s,” it said.

It revealed that all the up-gradation works of toilets for AWC at various centers viz Veterinary, Shahwuh-I and NAP out Sector under Shamator Town were never executed as per the laid down specifications or instructions. “As a matter of fact, bricks are to be used for (half) wall but instead, CGI Sheets were used from top to bottom as wall and is expected to be either blown or withered away within a span of few months.”

The STSU also informed that instead of constructing toilet and septic tank for AWC ‘F’ at NAP out sector, the concerned contractor was allowed to repair the four corner wall of the said center with CGI Sheets, which is contrary to the departments order.

As such, the STSU sought clarification from the officer “for willfully allowing the practice of engaging sub-contractors and random execution of all the up-gradation works that has directly violated and ignored the Directorate of Social Welfare Vide order dated Kohima, the 18th June 2016.”

It further cautioned that “lethargy (if found) on the part of the concerned authority in providing appropriate clarification as sought herewith, shall be dealt seriously and may also directly invite the STSU to initiate its own course of action.”
