Peren, Serptember 23 (MExN): Civil society and student organizations, including the Zeliangrong Students' Union Nagaland (ZSUN), Nsong Area Youth Organization (NAYO), and Nsong Kebai Public Organization (NKPO), have strongly condemned an alleged armed threat and intrusion at the residence of Zeliangrong Youth Front Nagaland (ZYFN) president R John Zeliang. The incident took place at Jalukie 'B' Village in Peren district on the night of September 20.
According to statements issued by the organizations, the incident occurred at approximately 11:10 PM when two unidentified individuals, reportedly dressed in half-camouflage attire and carrying fully automatic or sophisticated firearms, approached the vicinity of the president's residence. Alerted by an eyewitness, the president immediately raised an alarm and called his neighbors, prompting the armed intruders to flee the area.
Describing the incident as extremely serious and deeply disturbing, the bodies asserted that the rising gun culture and activities of armed groups have no place in a peaceful and law-abiding society. They emphasized that the late-night intrusion creates a grave sense of fear and insecurity, raising serious concerns over the safety of office-bearers and the general public. Furthermore, the organizations urged authorities to examine whether the act was a deliberate attempt to silence or intimidate their leadership and community advocacy.
Given the gravity of the situation, ZSUN, NAYO, and NKPO have collectively called upon the Police Department, district administration, and competent security authorities to launch a swift, impartial, and time-bound investigation. They demanded that the authorities identify and apprehend those involved, determine the motive behind the presence of the armed individuals, establish the source and nature of the weapons carried, and take strict legal action against anyone found responsible.
While ZSUN and NAYO reiterated that they will continue to discharge their public responsibilities peacefully, lawfully, and fearlessly without bowing to intimidation, the NKPO appealed to all sections of society to maintain peace, restraint, and communal harmony. The organizations stressed that prompt, transparent, and decisive action is vital to ensure that public confidence in the rule of law is upheld and that community representatives are not forced to live under constant fear.
