Tzurangkong Students' Conference (TKM) held a peaceful procession on Tuesday, protesting the lack of response from the concerned department over shortage of teachers in the Tzurangkong area. More than 500 students joined in the procession.

TKM President Imlisunep stated that the TKM has been pressing these issues and submitting representations to the concerned department on numerous occasions, but that the fair demand has been ignored. With all means exhausted, TKM has restored to peaceful procession to raise our grievance, he said.

“If the State Government focuses on quality , then can this shortage of teachers be termed or considered as quality education?” he asked. The TKM President further put on the record that “instead of deploying teachers, more transfer orders of teachers had been issued without replacement till date.”

The peaceful procession started from Watiyim Village Gate to Moayimti Junction covering a distance of 8 kilometres.

The students then returned to Tzurangkong Border Magistrate, Atsungba Walling to present a copy of a representation letter to him as well as to SDEO, Mangkolemba. The representation was addressed to the Principal Director, Department of School Education, Kohima, Nagaland, seeking immediate intervention to resolve the teacher shortage crisis in various schools in the Tzurangkong area.

In the letter, the student body also stated that the Department's numerous activities, training, and programmes have no significance, ‘when the implementers have to struggle and cross their line to make up for the teacher shortage in schools to complete the basic task.’

They also stated that TKM has chosen to take various steps till the situation is investigated and immediate needs are handled and met.

TKM stated in the attachment letter that a total of 14 teachers are required immediately, ranging from Maths, Science, Hindi, and other subject teachers.

Moreover, TKM President remarked that despite a stellar academic record and even producing an HSLC Topper in 2015, the GHS Tzurangkong, which serves more than 20 villages and neighbouring areas, is currently experiencing teacher shortages, infrastructure issues, and a slew of other challenges.

“The students are deprived of several opportunities, and in many ways, they lag behind their peers in other parts of the state,” they stated.

There are 778 students enrolled in various government schools under Tzurangkong range as per TKM data.
