Students’ keep date with lifetime event

Dimapur, July 22 (MExN): The much-awaited solar eclipse was viewed by students and teachers of Kohima, early morning of July 22. The morning weather was a patchwork of cloud, mist and blue sky but fortunately for the eclipse enthusiasts, the Sun was visible all throughout the duration of the eclipse which commenced from 5:30 AM and lasted  till  7:39 AM.

The eclipse-watch was organized by the Nagaland Institute of Health, Environment & Social Welfare. Large numbers of excited boys and girls came out of their hostels  to view the enthralling celestial display. The students were briefed on the event and the safety norms to be observed to prevent eye damage while viewing it. Safe black polymer solar filters prepared by Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India were provided . Although the umbral shadow of the Moon missed the state by a whisker, the magnitude of the eclipse was .963 and the bright sunny morning took on a strange hue similar to early dawn at the peak of the eclipse at 6:31 AM. It was an incredible experience and definitely a good enough reason to get up early from bed.
