Dimapur, April 24 (MExN): First batch 2005-2006 second semester degree students are in dilemma over the recent notices on semester backlog system of Nagaland University. The transition is not uniform in regard to semesters and inconsistent with various pertinent exigencies of the present academic system, a note from students pointed out and has demanded a uniform backlog system.
For the 2005-2006 first degree students, the NU provided that students failing to clear an honors paper in the promotion examination would be able to continue the next semester course as general students, the note stated. However, provisions for students failing to clear a general paper remains vague and they are bound to lose one academic year unlike honors students provided with the option of losing a year or dropping the honors and continue as general students, it lamented. It mentioned that the second batch degree students of 2006-2007 were the only ones provided with the backlog provisions. This is a discriminatory provision, the students pointed out reminding that the system’s regulation should be uniform for all degree students.
There are also exigencies like deaths in a family, serious illness, delay and other unforeseen circumstances where students might fail to appear for certain papers in examinations. Such students lose one whole year of effort and are deprived of backlogs and cannot re-appear as backlogs for the paper missed. Further, the note reminded that there are many students from lower backgrounds, pointing out that they come from a distance to pursue their academics with hardly sufficient support from home. “Without the backlogs system, if they fail to clear even one paper, they lose one academic year and ultimately their heavy expenses and had toil of a year is lost to dust, thus hampering their future progress” the students explained.
It was also reminded that owing to the vast syllabus and the completion of the same In a given (limited) time, regular classes for degree students in many colleges, commence months ahead before the declaration of the results after taking provisional admissions. “In this way the students complete the syllabus on time and thus benefit them. But his is possible only when there is provision for uniform backlog system” the students explained and strongly demanded that Nagaland University review the backlog system.
