Students' ultimatum to NEHU

SHILLONG, FEBRUARY 14 (NNN): Students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have decided to serve the University’s administrators a one month deadline to address a number of grievances that the students are presently facing.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) which also comprises of the North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and other student bodies held here on Thursday.

“We have decided to submit a memorandum to the NEHU authority demanding the immediate the resolving of the problems within a month’s time,” the finance secretary of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), Iarapbhathik Shangrit said here on Thursday.

Shangrit said that the erratic power and water supply have created a lot of problems for the students of the university since 2014.

He said despite memorandums being submitted on several occasions, there was absolutely no action taken on the part of the NEHU authority in this regard.

“The problem of irregular electricity supply in the campus has become a daily affair and due to this the water supply was also disrupted in which students cannot use the aqua guards for safe drinking water,” Shangrit said.

Apart from this, Shangrit has also urged the university authority to resolve the issues related to hostel facilities where many students are yet to get accommodation.

“We also want the authority to come up with a decision to address the concern related to restrictions imposed on hostellers,” he said.

Shangrit informed that the issues will also be taken up at the NEHUSU general body meeting to be held on February 22 next.

Meanwhile, during the meeting, the NEHUTA has demanded the authority to resolve issues related to the filling up of vacant teacher posts.
