Students’ union condemns assault by 5 Assam Rifles

Dimapur, September 3 (MExN): Viyixe Students' Union (VSU) has condemned the act of 5 Assam Rifles for physically assaulting Paul Anche, DB (Dobashi) II, on September 2 “without any rhyme or reason.” The incident happened within an hour of the firing incident that took place near Aghunato, said a press release from VSU President, Kiyekhu Yeptho.

According to the press release, Paul Anche was returning to village after attending to his duty at the ADC Customary Court, Aghunato, where he works. He halted at the Tri Junction in Aghunato Town, some 4-5 kilometer away from the reported site of the firing incident, where many other people had gathered talking about what was going on.   “

The Assam Rifles came rushing from the confronting site towards the Town and at the Tri Junction started harassing those who were gathered there. While others had escaped, Paul Anche felt that being a DB II, he would be spared but the Assam Rifles grabbed and surrounded him and started punching, kicking and hitting him with gun butts in spite of repeatedly telling the Assam Rifles that he is a DB serving under ADC Customary Court Aghunato,” VSU recounted.

It said that Paul had been beaten up black and blue at the time of the arrival of Administration officials and elders, who rescued him and took him to hospital. VSU denounced the Assam Rifles for “preaching the 'Friends of the Hill People' but not sparing even the responsible public servant.” The students’ union also thanked the officials and elders who rescued the victim.
