DIMAPUR, May 12 (MExN): The Mopong Hongkong Students’ Union (MHSU) has uncovered critical deficiencies in the education system during a comprehensive inspection of schools within the Mopong Circle in Mon, conducted from May 6 to 8.
The inspection drive, which covered both government and private institutions, revealed widespread issues including an acute shortage of teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of essential learning materials. Many schools were found to be operating in dilapidated conditions without sufficient classrooms or sanitation facilities, the MHSU stated.
“These challenges undermine both teaching effectiveness and student performance, raising urgent concerns about the future of education in our community,” the Union said.
As part of the drive, the MHSU also visited Tobu Newman School to convey concerns raised by its branch in Hongkong Christ, Mopong Town. According to the Union, the school’s principal acknowledged the problems and showed willingness to implement reforms, marking what MHSU described as “a positive precedent for collaboration between student bodies and educational institutions.”
In a move to uplift educator morale and improve academic standards, the Union announced a new initiative to recognize outstanding teachers. Launched under the office of the Education Secretary, the program aims to annually honour top-performing teachers. It seeks to boost morale, set benchmarks for excellence, and foster a culture of appreciation among educators.
The MHSU urged government agencies, school administrations, and local stakeholders to take urgent and sustainable steps—including infrastructure development, recruitment drives, and increased funding—to ensure quality education for all students.
“By working together, we can transform these challenges into opportunities and build a stronger, more equitable education system for future generations,” the statement added.
